The demo version of no more heroes can be streamed in entirety from Last.fm

The temptation to rerecord this is there, certainly, if only because of one bad note that I can hear very clearly whenever it plays, but this more than any other demo except perhaps Mother Mary contains so many unreproducible happy accidents that are simple magic moments for me.  I suspect that, when all is said and done, this version will end up on the disc as is.

{Backstory}:

Written post-divorce (surprised?), I think it was only the extraordinary turmoil that I was experiencing that allowed me to channel this piece as focused as I did.  The title was in part inspired by my grandmother, who had finally succumbed enough to Alzheimer’s that she was no longer the grandmother I had grown up with — she recognized no one, except in all-too-brief spurts of confused clarity, and her personality had changed dramatically.  In other part, the title came from the divorce, and David Bowie’s Heroes, the German version of which (Helden, from the SOUND + VISION box set)  I was addicted to at the time.

{Demo notes}:

Me me me me me.

{Fixes/Influences}:

Note: these link to YouTube videos, most of which are probably unauthorized. If one of them is down, try searching for the song. And as always, if you dig the songs, I highly recommend dropping a few bucks on the full discs — these artists are well-worth your financial support. Feel free to leave comments or suggestions in the comments.

  • If there’s one very clear and simple influence, it’s Joe Satriani’s Saying Goodbye. Please don’t sue me, Joe.
